Croatia is – even for European standards- relatively small. However, it impresses with its intangible treasures recognised by UNESCO as World Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites, as well as with its kilometer-long beaches that pave the way into the crystal Adriatic sea including its over 1000 islands.
In addition to everything that is special about the country, the shape of it itself is also very extraordinary. It has a part that faces north-west towards the mainland and a very long, almost crescent-shaped arm that runs along the coast. On the not-seaward side of the crescent arm Bosnia and Herzegovina divides Croatia’s coast from the rest of the country. Apart from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro are also neighboring countries.
The little country is home to almost 4 million people. The official currency is the Euro (since 2023) and the Kapital City is Zagreb.
Croatia offers a variety of cities. Zagreb as its capital is the biggest one with the largest population. Around 800.000 people live there. For this reason, the city is the seat of various authorities, but it is also home to the Croatian Academy of Sciences. Although the city, unlike many others, is not by the sea, it is well worth a visit because there is so much to explore. For example, the imposing cathedral, which dates back to the 13th century. Or you can take a 19th century cable car from the lower town to the upper town.
There are countless other beautiful places to visit along the coast. Some of them have even made it to Hollywood. Split, for example, is a filming location for Game of Thrones.
Croatia is known as the “country of 1000 Islands” – Strictly speaking, the national territory even includes 1246 islands. But only around 50 are permanently inhabited. The Islands alone are responsible for almost 4.400 km coastal length. There is no need to emphasize that the beaches here are numerous and beautiful, but in addition to this, the islands are also varied in their landscape and culture. The largest islands are Krk and Cres.
