Germany Basics

Germany is well known worldwide for its large size (by European standards), strong economy, and global political importance. Its people also travel widely, making its presence felt around the globe. However, what many don’t expect is the country’s countless facets, making it nearly impossible to generalize about Germany.

So, if you’re traveling there, be prepared—it might surprise you and be different than you think.

Facts about Germany

Germany is located in the north-central part of Europe and features a wide variety of geographical landscapes. From the foothills of the Alps to the Black Forest, lake plains, and coastal seas, it offers a diverse range of natural beauty.

With 84 million inhabitants, it is the most populous country in the EU, and about one-fifth of the population has a migration background. Germany is divided into 16 federal states, with Bavaria, the largest, being the best known.

Culinary-wise, Germany is famous for its beer and bakeries. Over 5,000 different beers are produced in more than 1,350 breweries, and the German Bread Register lists over 3,000 types of bread. Be sure to try a few on your visit! Also, beer drinking is legal in Germany from the age of 16.

German Citys

Germany has several large cities with 1 to 5 million inhabitantsm such as Berlin, Munich, and Cologne. As well as many smaller cities with fewer than a million people. Both have their unique charm.

Major cities like Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg buzz with energy. Berlin, the capital, draws visitors with its dynamic arts scene, street food, and historical landmarks. Munich blends traditional Bavarian culture with a modern lifestyle, while Hamburg captivates with its iconic harbor, the Elbphilharmonie, and vibrant nightlife. In contrast, smaller cities like Heidelberg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and Lübeck charm visitors with their historic architecture, detailed beauty, and cozy atmosphere. These towns offer a peaceful, charming side of Germany, balancing the excitement of the bigger cities.

German Nature

About 30% of the land is forest, there are around 40 famous forest areas. Like the black forest or the Bavarian Forest. In total, there are 90 billion trees in all of Germany’s forested areas growing.

Trees are of course not the only thing that Germany’s nature has to offer. The foothills of the Alps extend to the north of the country. Perfect for hiking or skiing

A somewhat more dignified and flatter nature can be found in central Germany until it finally runs out completely flat into the North- and Baltic Seas. Both seas are quite cool. But you can swim there. If this is too fresh for you, you can also go sailing or windsurfing.
