Located in the heart of Europe in the Carpathian Basin, Hungary has one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe: Budapest, which is also the country’s most visited destination. The impressive architecture of Budapest – The grand Lake Balaton, and the vast plains of the Pannonian region – make Hungary a fascinating travel destination in Europe.
Facts
Hungary is not surrounded by the sea, but it borders many countries. It has a total of seven neighbors, including Austria, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, and Romania. Due to this geographical location, Hungary offers the perfect starting point for a trip through several European countries.
Hungary has been part of the European Union since 2004. But it is not part of the monetary union. This means that it is not possible to pay with the euro in Hungary: Instead, you need the forint. Be careful where you change your money, only go to shops or directly to the bank. Never change money on the street or at simple stalls.
Hungary has a total population of 9.7 million, of which just under 20% live in the capital Budapest.
Cities of Hungary
The keyword: the capital Budapest – definitely one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. As the name suggests, the city consists of two parts: Buda and Pest. These are divided by the Danube river which winds its way through the city centre.
The river and the green island in the middle of the neighborhoods are parts of Budapest’s beauty, another is the buildings. The famous Parliament is on the banks of the Danube and on the opposite side of it is the Fisherman’s Bastion. It stands on Castle Hill on the site of Buda’s medieval fish market. Which is responsible for the naming. Just 2 of the city’s many impressive buildings. Another special thing about Budapest is that even old ruined houses are worth seeing. In some of the ruins are even bars and nightclubs located.
There is so much more to say about Budapest. But other cities in Hungary are also worth a visit – and a word. For example, Szeged which is also known as TheSun City. As it has the most hours of sunshine in the country. Or Debrecen, the second largest city in the country, is also known as the city of a thousand faces, as it has an incredible number of facets.
Nature
In addition to the cities, the country’s nature also has a lot to offer. The Danube River, with its numerous branches and the Danube Delta, provides excellent opportunities for camping and outdoor activities. The country is home to the expansive Puszta or steppe. And the scenic Lake Balaton, known as the “Hungarian Sea”. In the northeast, the Tokaj region is famed for its world-class wines, while the Bükk National Park, Hungary’s largest, offers lush forests and rich biodiversity.
Also, Hungary is known for its famous red wine regions. Including Eger, Balaton, and in general the southern part of the country. The wine culture is an important part of the Hungarian culture and if you are there you should definitely try it!
A secret tip is: that Mosonmagyaróvár, a tributary of the Danube flows through the region, which offers blooming nature and is also a dream for camping, kayaking, and rafting.
Despite its beauty, it is unknown to many, which is why it is quite easy to find a quiet place in nature for yourself.
(You must also go to one of the countless thermal baths, preferably to recover from an intensive day in the city or a long hike)
