Paris is known as the epitome of romance. This is understandable when you see the illuminated Eiffel Tower, the banks of the Seine, or the city’s small cafés. But is it really the most romantic city in Europe? Smaller, more charming cities also offer intimacy. Here are tree romantic alternatives that are just as enchanting as the French capital.

The hearts of every Shakespeare fan will now leap for joy. It was certainly no coincidence that Verona became the setting for the world-famous romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet. The city’s narrow, winding streets are dotted with small squares, home to typical Italian cafés and trattorias.
But history lovers will also find something to enjoy in this city. The Arena di Verona is a well-preserved Roman amphitheatre built around 30 AD. Today, it hosts opera, concert and play performances. What could be more romantic than a date evening in an ancient theatre in the city of the famous love tragedy?

A small town in Austria’s Salzkammergut region, which has become world-famous for its picture-perfect beauty. Small colourful houses nestled against the steep rock faces, plus a view of Lake Hallstatt with the Dachstein mountain behind it. What a view!
Admittedly, this small town is so popular that it is often very crowded. However, many visitors are just day tourists. Hallstatt is particularly romantic at dusk and at night and is significantly quieter then. This is definitely a reason to stay there overnight. Hallstatt is a year-round destination. While most tourists visit in the summer, spring sees the surrounding nature come alive. In autumn, the landscape is awash with golden and colourful hues. And in winter, the whole area is a real snowy winter wonderland.

Another small town is Český Krumlov. It is much less well-known. But it is just as romantic. The town impresses with its medieval old town, built along the Vltava River. Particularly impressive is the castle, which was built around 1253 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. It is well preserved and, thanks to its long history, artifacts from the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque periods can be found in the castle.
If you’re looking for a romantic outing, a boat trip is our recommendation, especially in spring and summer. Small local companies take you just outside the city, where you can then paddle downstream in a rubber dinghy or canoe into the heart of the picturesque town. As you go, you’ll pass impressive architecture and beautiful scenery. An experience that definitely brings people together and strengthens bonds.

We’re not saying that Paris isn’t romantic, there’s no question that the city is beautiful and worth a visit. But true love can be found anywhere, and plenty romantic alternatives are just as perfect for couples.
