Italy is known for so many things: its long history and the ancient roman sites one can visit. Its beautiful cities like Rome or Venice, or its delicious food. In addition to all the treasures to be found on the mainland, the Italian islands are also exceptional. In total there are more than 200 islands belonging to the Mediterranean country. Each one would be worth a visit, but here is here is a list of the three biggest ones you can start with.

Sicily: The largest Italian island

Sicily naturally tops this list, as it is the largest island in Italy and the entire Mediterranean Sea. The Island is located in the southwest of the mainland. Only 3km (about 1,8 miles) away from Calabria lies the island in the sea.

Hardly any other region in Italy is richer in historical and archaeological evidence than Sicily, as besides the romans used to be there, also the Greeks, Carthaginians, Normans, Byzantines and Arabs were located there at certain points in history and left their marks on the island.

The island clearly has something to offer for history fans, but its natural features, such as the mountainous region with the famous volcano Mount Etna, are equally remarkable.

Sardinia: Paradise of crystal-clear waters

Sardinia, the second biggest italien island, is renowned for its beaches. The water is turquoise, and the sand is white. The sun shines there almost all year round. This island is really an absolute paradise for those who wants sun, sea and good vibes. The people there know how to enjoy life and love to share all of it: with good food, good wine and a lot of cultural festivals.

Elba: Island of Exile

Even is Elba is third places in this list, which means it’s the third biggest Italian island, its by far smaller than the first two. To surround the whole island by car, you will just need around 2 hours.

Geographically the island has a lot of hills and beaches. The nice thing about the hilly landscape is, that there are a lot of high viewing points. Also there are a lot of little mountain villages which are beautiful and cute. The beaches on elba offer something for everyone, there are small remote bays, which a perfect for a romantic sunset or long shallow beaches which are perfect for various water sports.

And not fo forget Elba was the exil of Napoleon, who spent around 300 days after his abdication in 1814 there. Today, Napoleon’s residences on Elba are museums that display many memorabilia and documents from his time on the island.

These 3 islands are beautiful in their own right and all three are worth a visit. And this is just the beginning, another 200 Italian islands are waiting to be discovered
