Both versions of the name, the English and the German one, are quite old and have their roots in the Latin name version. The German name probably originates from the Latin term lacum Potamicum, which was used in 840 AD. In 1087 AD, the name bodemse was first recorded, which is quite similar to Bodensee. The alternative name, Lake Constance, arose after the Council of Constance in 1418 AD as the city became more important in the medieval European world.
