Located at the southwestern part of Europe at the intersection of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Lake Constance is a wonderful area with beautiful nature, interesting historic sights, and a variety of cultural events to explore. The lake is the third biggest in Central Europe. With its special cross-border situation and the multifaceted activities to do. It is a perfect travel destination for those who seek relaxation, adventure, and inspiration.

The Unique Cross-Border Situation

Besides the natural beauty, one of the most unique and remarkable aspects of Lake Constance is its location. It borders Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. So, all three countries do have borders in or at the lake. This is an interesting fact itself, but the paths along the lake are just stunning. In Germany, the name-giving city of Constance is a must-see, as you can explore small medieval streets and sights there. Bregenz is the picturesque lakeside town in Austria, and St. Gallen is the Swiss equivalent.

The Names: Bodensee or Lake Constance?

All three bordering countries speak a variety of the German language, and in German, Lake Constance is called Bodensee. Both versions of the name, the English and the German one, are quite old and have their roots in the Latin name version. The German name probably originates from the Latin term lacum Potamicum, which was used in 840 AD. In 1087 AD, the name bodemse was first recorded, which is quite similar to Bodensee. The alternative name, Lake Constance, arose after the Council of Constance in 1418 AD as the city became more important in the medieval European world.

Lake Constance Islands

In total, the lake homes ten little islands. All of which have their own charm and long-lasting history, but three stand out. Mainau, Reichenau, and Lindau: These are the three biggest ones and the most important. The largest one is Reichenau, and it’s known for its UNESCO World Heritage Monastery. Mainau is a flower island: the whole island literally is a flower garden. The flowers bloom in every imaginable color and are formed into spectacular sculptures. Lindau is a small historic island-city and worth a visit to stroll through the charming old town and see the famous harbor.

The Nature

The lake itself has crystal-clear water and depending on the direction of view, is surrounded by either vineyards, hills, or the majestic Alpine peaks. The area offers something for everyone: It is perfect for people who like watersports such as sailing, swimming, or water skiing. Just like for those who prefer being on land. The famous bike trail around the lake is especially, but not only, a highlight for cycling enthusiasts. But even if you want to take it easy, you can simply relax in one of the beautiful places by the lake and enjoy the view.
