Masuria is a region in the northeast of Poland. It is known for its beautiful, untouched nature, which is mainly characterized by its numerous lakes. It offers a multitude of possibilities to enjoy the scenery from the water. When you are into water sports, this is the perfect destination for you.
The area of the Masurian Lake District is over 300km (~186 miles) big and hosts over 2000 lakes. They are connected through several canals. Masuria is also called “the land of the 1000 lakes”, and to be honest, that’s even an understatement.
The most known lake in the Masurian Lake District is the Śniardwy. Which is also the largest lake in Poland. But also, many small lakes are worth a visit, for example, the Bełdany or the Tasek Sawicki.
If you want to feel the wind in your hair and the ultimate experience of freedom you should go sailing at the Masurian lakes. The winds are calm, so even if you are not an experienced sailor, it is safe. But the breeze is still strong enough to carry you through the well-developed water routes. Particularly recommended are tours that lead through various lakes and the canals to small villages. Perfect opportunities to dock in a small harbor and discover the local culture and the food. Have you ever tried Pierogi?
A quieter and more relaxed alternative to sailing is paddling. Kayaks are most suitable here, as they offer the opportunity to take in the landscape more intensively. There are countless paddling routes along smaller lakes and rivers such as the Krutynia, which lead you through a natural beauty. The Krutynia River is actually one of the most famous kayak rivers in Europe and offers a relaxing trip through beautiful forests and floodplains.
If you are already hooked on the idea of going on your next trip to Poland to experience the water paradise is one thing important to think about – the season. As it is an outdoor event, and somewhat dependent on the weather, the best time to travel to the Masurian Lake District is from May to September. During this time the water temperature is pleasant, the weather is warm and sunny and most of the charter companies and rental stations are open.
