When the leaves have fallen and the temperature has dropped, a magical time begins in Europe. The Advent season is also the Christmas market season. There are countless beautiful markets, some of which are world-famous, such as those in Nuremberg, Vienna and Budapest. But even lesser-known and smaller markets have a special charm. That’s why today we’re focusing on three extraordinary Christmas markets in Europe.
We start with a highlight. Rattenberg, might be Austria’s smallest town with only 462 inhabitants, and it is hidden between the rocks in the Inn Valley, but during Christmas it shines in a special light. The small town completely dispenses with electric lighting and creates its atmosphere with pure candlelight. This makes the Rattenberg Advent a place that feels like something out of an old Christmas story. As you stroll through the medieval streets of this very small town, the flickering of torches and fires accompanies you. And you are surrounded by the wintry mountain landscape of Tyrol.

In recent years, the Croatian capital, Zagreb, has developed into one of Europe’s most exciting winter destinations. Its Christmas market has been voted the most beautiful several times, yet it remains relatively unknown. From the end of November, the city is transformed into an Christmas market wonderland. Throughout the whole city, you can find light installations, designer markets, concerts and winter delicacies. A must-try is the Croatian mulled wine called kuhano vino. The Tomislavac area is particularly elegant at this time of year as it allows you to ice skate under the arches of lights.

Tallin, in Estonia, is the perfect winter city. The old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, glows in a warm light, surrounded by medieval towers, cobblestones and snow-covered roofs. The Christmas market is located on the town hall square and is therefore relatively small. In the middle of the square stands a huge Christmas tree, which has been placed there since 1441. This probably makes it the first publicly displayed Christmas tree in Europe. As Tallinn is located so far north, snow is almost guaranteed here. Together with the lights and the aromas of Baltic delicacies, this creates a unique Christmas atmosphere.

Winter in Europe offers countless magical places that are snowy, illuminated, and festive. These are just a few of the many cities that are particularly worth visiting in winter to check out the magic and the extraordinary Christmas markets.
