In summer, most people associate a holiday in Europe with a trip to Italy, Greece, or Croatia, all the Mediterranean pearls. If there’s sun and sea, everything is fine. But what about the countries in Europe that don’t have access to the sea, or at least not to the warm Mediterranean? Does that mean they’re off the table for a summer getaway or a beach-style holiday? Not at all, trust me.
Many European countries may not have a coastline, but they offer something just as refreshing lakes. And not just any lakes, for those seeking for an extra dose of adrenaline: many are perfect for cliff jumping. So, if you’re planning a swimming holiday away from the sea, here’s your guide to Europe’s best lakes for swimming and jumping, and what you need to know before you go.

In the middle of the Bavarian alps, you can find one of Germany’s deepest and most beautiful lakes. Various advantages are based on its depth. Firstly, the water is refreshingly cold and always crystal clear, even at the height of summer. It is also quite safe for cliff jumping. Stones and rocky walls around the lake, which invite you to jump at different heights, are very suitable for the adrenaline seekers.
Hungary’s “inland sea” is more about easy swimming and lake culture than cliff jumping, but it still deserves a spot on the list. It is the largest inland lake in the whole of Europe and characterizes the entire region in Hungary. Lake Balaton is rather warm compared to the Alpine lakes. The north shore has deeper waters and a few rocky sections where you can jump in safely, it’s a perfect spot if you want to jump but not from too high cliffs. Balaton is also perfect for combining easy jumping, swimming with wine tasting, lakeside festivals, and chill beach bars.
Far in the northeast corner of Poland, you can find Lake Hańcza, the deepest lake in the country. Surrounded by forests and rolling hills, it’s a peaceful escape for wild swimmers and scuba divers alike. There are no official cliff jump areas, but many of the stone walls are very suitable. It’s best to take your bearings from the locals, they know their nature very well. The lake changes its depth quickly.
Please note and remember when cliff jumping:
Only jump from cliffs if you are sure that the water below you is deep enough. Sometimes the view into the water can be deceptive. When jumping from higher cliffs, make sure that you dive in as straight as possible and with your feet first. Always follow the local rules and only jump if you feel comfortable and safe doing so.
